SANDRA in Athens (Greece, 23 July 2008)
by Frank 'Joy of Life' for SANDRAnet

Hello dear fans and friends,

after the trip to ATHENS for the SANDRA concert on 23rd july 2008 i made an report and wish you lot of fun with reading…

All began with a rumor.. On Thursday afternoon the 29th May 2008 was next to unannounced open air in Büsum now another concert from Sandra on her booking agency posted.

WOW, for the first time in her career there was a concert in Greece announced. Only a few performances was filmed in Athens in 1987.

Is that date really true?! Or just a confusion?!

After enquiries in the management was reached fairly rapidly disillusionment with statements like ".. it is not yet firmly…", ".. it is so far only a question…", "… there are no signed contracts .." A few days later, the information from the Booking Agency removed..

A few days later arranged another date for confusion - there was information that Sandra will be for a concert on 23rd of July 2008 in Athens at the “TECHNOPOLIS” and the tickets will cost 35 euro. This information was also confirmed by the Booking Agency. This date was also written on the homepage from Sandra´s dancer Toni. It seems, that now everythings done and confirmed and the concert will be in Greece. For me was that the point to start thinking about to do that trip to Athens for the concert.…

Regardless of other persons, I began planning my trip, was looking for possible flights and looked for hotels near the location. Weeks goes by and a different feelings beside me went wide. At that time it was not for sure that I will do that trip, but to be sure I saved a few days free from work.

After the unforgettable trip from last year December together with Alina and Ricardos I was in a good mood that they will maybe do this trip to Athens with me. Ricardos said from the first moment, that this trip will be not possible for him.

How nearer the date with Athens was coming, I was much more sure that I will do this and said to me: “I will be definitely be there – ATHENS, I`M COMING!” Doesn´t matter if somebody come with me or not. Concerts in a other country as your home one are something very special and totally different to that in Germany. Trips like this can be a great combination of relaxing, culture and to see our beloved SANDRA.

In the beginning of July there was the first official informations on greek pages with the concert date and promotional posters.

Until two weeks before the concert I had neither a flight, no hotel booked and what´s more important – I had NO ticket… Basically it would be ver easy to get a ticket online in a printable version. But that was no way for me – I was interested to get an ORIGINAL-ticket and that was only to get with a order by courier.

My trip starts very early in the morning of the 23rd of July 2008 from the cologne/bonn airport. Near lunch time I arrived after an adventurous taxi ride my hotel ath the Omonia Square. As I arrived at the reception to check in I heared a known voice behind me “Buhuu, it´s me”. As I turned around a saw a smiling Alina in front of me. After a warm welcomed and a short talk I finished my check-in and than we went for a moment in the hotel room to relax a bit.

After a short update about our trips to Athens with our experiences, we went back to the reception and asked about the shortest way to the “TECHNOPOLIS”.

We´ll, it was very easy to come to that place. Only one station from “Omonia Station” to “Monastiraki” and than with a other metro to “Keramikos”. Very relaxed we go up the steps and we saw our destination place “EXIT TECHNOPOLIS – GAZI”.

After making a few pictures we used the next escalator up into the brooding heat (33 degrees) and saw directly countless promotional posters for the SANDRA concert. It was indescribable and a great feeling to see so many posters all over the walls around the area of “Gazi”. It´s great to see, how much promotion for Sandra is in other countries..

Only a few minutes to walk away from the metreo station the was the area of the “Technopolis”. At his time everything was open and possible to go in. We walked on the grounds from the old factory and looked at the location for the evening. At the rear entrance (closed on that evening) were technicians for preparing the stage for the concert. Nobody bothered us and it was no problem to look around and check the location. On the premises were many buildings, where we not knows, what would be inside. In some buildings it seems as there are bars inside – but also closed on that evening.

Before we drove back to our hotel we used the time to drink something in a bar called „HIVER“ in the heat oft he afternoon. It was great to see all the walls with many Sandra posters.

At 6 o´clock we was ready for the evening and started to go back to the area of “Gazi”. Back at the main entrance we were now facing Securitys and barriers. We were one of the first persons for waiting to come in. Sandra had about 1 hour before her sound-check. According timetable was about 9:30 pm a support act announced and Sandra should start at 10:30 pm for a 60 minutes concert. After a quick look around the corner (with direct view to the stage) to see that we will miss nothing near the stage, than we went back to the main entrance and put us directly in front of the Securitys on stones and steamed in the heat ahead of us. By and by the place filled near the entrance and the one or the other conversation with greek fans began. Shortly afterwards Matt came to us with a friend of him and together we saved the main entrance to came in as first. Few minutes after 8 pm the doors are opened and we walked to our places in front of stage in the middle. We was in front of where the microphone was already placed. In the beginning everythings seemed quite clear and it was very hot. By and by at the evening the place filled more and more. Warm-Up made a Greek DJ and played for the audience many hits from the 80ies. Sometimes he played also Hits from Sandra like “Johnny Wanna Live”. As it was more dark he played also the videos to the songs – they was to see on a big screen behind him. Hey played Songs from acts like Modern Talking, Sabrina and also from the german group “Münchner Freiheit” or the duet from Sandra & DJ Bobo “Secrets Of Love”.

After 10 pm the DJ leaved the stage and the local amateur band called “VHS” came on stage and played cover versions from songs like “Self Control”, “Fame”, “Rock Me Amadeus” or “Billy Jean”. As their 40 minutes on stage was finished, we got music in the background and people prepared the stage for Sandra´s appearance.

11 pm.. the stage will be dark.. the big moment was coming.. with bated breath we was looking from one to the other side of the stage and asked ourselves “From where they will enter the stage?!” it´s 11:06 as we heared the first notes of “The Second Day”. It was a super atmosphere on the grounds of the Technopolis with the high, illuminated towers in the background of the evening twilight. At the first sounds of “Maria Magdalena” stormed Toni in a white jacket, whit hat, blue jeans, dark t-shirt and sport shoes to the stage, followed by Dominic in similar the same outfit. Few moments later Sandra came with a big applause to the stage in an elegant, black, long dress and very unususal in high paragraph shoes. Many people around us sang loudly the song. Many photographs placed directly in front of us and stopped sometimes our great view to the stage. As the sound stopped, Sandra visibly enjoyed the raging applause, she opened her concert with the words “hello and welcome… good evening Greece.. I´m very very proud to be here..” than she spoke about that she is since a view days in Athens and gave many interviews in that time. Sandra was in a incredibly good mood, the joy and enthusiasm to perform in Athens was indeed her face. “…I wanna see your lips.. and I wanna hear you..” With these opening words and their radiation was immediately captures the audience on her side.

It goes on with “Johnny Wanna Live”. In the area between the stage and the barrier stumbled countless photographs to get the best place to make the best pictures. Unfortunately it was for us in the first row not so easy to make good pictures – the lights on the stage was definitely to bright. Sandra was many times walking from the middle to the left side of the stage and to the right side also to see all her fans and waved the hand and was sending kisses to the audience.

As the sound stopped, she started to talk again. She was in a very great “talking-mood” and there was loud scream from the audience “SANDRA.. WE LOVE YOU…” she answered fast “I LOVE YOU TOO…” and with typical hand movements she was sending kisses to the direction of the fans. Yiannis, a Greek fan with we had a conversation before the concert, painted a picture from Sandra for Sandra and held it at that moment in the air. Sandra saw this from the stage and came directly to the stage edge to be transferred to. Full of excitement she held the picture up and read the personal dedication on the back: "My beloved Sandra Thank you for beeing a timeless inspiration. Forever Yours .. Yiannis "

Now she began to tell us a story about a little girl, for which she wrote a story like in a fairytale, as in “CINDARELLA”, which lost her shoe. She was for the video shooting in Venice in winter and it was very cold. These were the opening words for “Little Girl”.

After this song Sandra noted, "There is too much light .." and kept her hand in front of her face - Unfortunately, without effect, how the rest of the concert confirmed… In "Stop For A Minute" and the animated audience to clap to the beat.

Than she was singing the ballad “Change Your Mind”.

Sandra began to say that we all know that songs she played till that moment. Now would come something what may we don´t know. A song from her last album “The Art Of Love”. The audience showed her loud that she is with her meaning on the wrong way and she responded with “…oh you know? Oh, than I should do some more songs…”

Before it came from her “Close To Seven”-Album one of my favorite song called “Mirrored In Your Eyes”. In her performance she was dancing very close with her dancer Toni…

For “In The Heat Of The Night” raged the mass again, all clapped their hands and sang loudly, while Sandra swept from on side to the next side.

After seven songs now was the time has to come where Sandra said: “…now it´s enough..” she based her feet on the box in front of us and opened her shoes. “Now we wanna dance.. ok? Put these shoes off!” The audience was laughing in that moment.. It was a very funny moment…

At the beginning of “What Is It About Me” she show goes on for Sandra without her shoes.

Before Sandra sang the song “Hiroshima” on a chair with her feet on a box in front of her she said a few words about the song.

“…and now put all your hands up” called Sandra to her fans at the beginning of one of her greatest hits “Everlasting Love”. The masses raged again, clapped there hands and sang loudly with her. The mood was overwhelming and Sandra even seemed to have been surprised how many fans she still has in Greece. She smiled through her face and swept from one side to the other side of the stage and there was again a friendly hug with Toni.

Now it was time to say “Goodbye…” Sandra was leaving the stage with her two boys…

It seems, as it´s in Greece not known that the people should scream loud “adding” to get some more songs. The two boys came back shortly afterwards and animated the audience to make some noise to bring Sandra back to the stage…

Sandra came back to the stage with a water bottle in her hand and the show goes on with “Mignight Man”. Her whole face was smiling very much and full of power they swept together on the stage and they obviously had fun.

As the song stopped, the audience was screaming very loud “SANDRA…SANDRA…SANDRA…”

The last song for this evening was for the second time “Maria Magdalena”

With the words “Thank you very much! See you next time in Athens…” Sandra said goodby to the fans. It was to see how overwhelmed she was from the audience and together with her boys she left the stage after a 60 minutes concert. Than the stage darkened again…

Happy about the concert and the amazing atmosphere of Athens we was talking excitedly about the concert and waited until the place gradually emptied. With cold drinks we stand near the barricade. We´ll, it was surely unlikely that we will see Sandra and Olaf again, but we wanted to stay near the barricade to keep our eyes on it.

After 20 minutes later the unexpected happened.. Many Greek fans pushed to the isolation and we heared loud voices from there.. Sandra came back together with Olaf to the waiting fans iat the barrier. Patiently she gave each of them autographs, some with a personal dedication. Between 5 and 10 minutes Sandra wrote relaxed autographs and demonstrated again, how happy and in a lucky mood she was that moment.

Together with Matt and Yiannis we celebrated till the morning light in a club with cool beats near this place.

Now comes for me the moment to say special thanks to all those people with whom we had so much unforgettable moments in Athens. It was a very nice time with many great impressions and many international conversations. It´s always a big pleasure to meet fans from around the world. All mention individually would take too long. I´m sure that every persons will know who I mean.. Right?! ;-)

And here are a few more impressions of the two following days from Alina and me:

After an extensive visit to the "AKROPOLIS" and hours of run we met in the "Temple of Zeus" with Chris from Corfu and are made a walk in the nearly National Park. Then Alina and I visit the Olympic terrain where the 2004 Olympics took place. At night we were together with Paris and his wife in a very nice location in the mountains, where we have a stunning view of "Athens by night". Thank you also very much for the great time we spend together. We enjoyed that very much and it was also a pleasure to meet.

Alina´s birthday we spent very relaxed on a nearly island called “Aigena” and we made this day after a leisurely walk at the beach in a pub with sea view and “Samos” wine and a tasty dishes comfortable.

At the end of this report I would like to say a BIG THANKS to Alina for great days we spent together and for the great memories we now have from our Athens trip.

See you soon in?! – BÜSUM!
